Day 14 – 7/18/09 – 100 Mile House

Tonight we are staying in 100 Mile House, BC which is about 300 miles north of the US border.  Of course I had to find out the origin of the unique name of this town – turns out the town is on the route of the gold prospectors from the 1860’s.  The route started in the town of Lillooet, BC and there was a wayhouse 100 miles into the route.  You guessed it, the town eventually acquired the name of 100 Mile House and there’s also a town called 70 Mile House – I think we pass through it tomorrow.

We rode over 400 miles today but at least 100 of them were in a cold downpour with no place to stop.  Thank goodness we had put on our rain gear first thing this morning because it was late afternoon before we could even think of taking it off.  But about 20 miles from our destination, the sun popped out and the sky stayed blue so we ended the day on a high note.

We’re trying to find information about road conditions on the Sea to Sky Highway tomorrow to determine our route.  Burl wants to go to Whistler which will be the site of the 2010 Olympic ski runs but we’re told there is a lot of road construction in that area and there may also be patches of unpaved roads.  Not a good thing for a motorcycle to meet.

Once we determine if we’re going to Whistler then we’ll know our route and where to pass through customs and how to get to the Pacific Coast Highway.  Good thing we have GPS.

Dinner tonight was at a neat restaurant near our hotel.  It’s called El Cabell and they serve Mexican and German foods – perfect for us since I can always opt for good Mexican food and Burl loves his schnitzel.

After dinner and a couple of margaritas, we’re ready to crash for the night.
