Day 10 – 7/14/09 – Not Much Rest For The Weary   Leave a comment

Today is our “rest” day  but we’ve had plenty to do.  After breakfast I did laundry and was glad I started early because by time I transferred my clothes to the dryers, there was a line waiting behind me.  Guess all the other travelers were running short on clean clothes – plus the hotel only had 2 washers and 2 dryers.  In between my wait times, I power walked and luckily stayed dry the whole time because the rain has been light and intermittent all day.

At noon Burl and I attended the meeting of the Rotary Club of Jasper where I got to exchange club banners with their club president.

There was also a guest there from Bellingham, WA and he invited me to his club if we’re there next Monday at noon.  The members were quite friendly and gave Burl advice on where to get help for a motorcycle problem and we also met the manager of the hotel where we are staying.  More examples of the international friendships that Rotary offers.

Burl discovered this morning that something (oil, grease?) is leaking out of the rear of the motorcycle onto the rear tire.  He consulted with a friend at home and then got some stuff at the auto parts store that “should” fix the problem – or at least get us to Prince George (233 miles west of here) where he has already talked to a GoldWing mechanic who can look at it tomorrow.  Here’s hoping we don’t have to engage Plan B.  Let’s also hope the rear end isn’t going out as that’s about a $1500 fix and may require a wait of a few days to get one located.  Apparently dealers don’t just keep these rear ends laying around!!!

We spent time this afternoon talking with a Harley dealer who was most helpful and then walking to the auto parts place (no O’Reilley here :-(   ) – and then strolled down the main drag of Jasper.

As you can see, the wildlife roams freely around this town but I managed to hide behind Burl and this friendly critter didn’t cause us any problems.  There are several statues along the main drag and they are favorite spots for Kodak moments.

While Burl iced down his foot, I did a little shopping since I had spotted a knitting shop near our hotel.  I managed to squelch my desire to add to my yarn stash although they had some beautiful yarn – at beautiful prices.  Only bought some pattern books that were on sale so now I can plan my next projects.  I had to remind myself that I have a lot of unused credit at my favorite local shop at home so I’d better use that first.

The rain has stopped – again – so I’m going to go play mechanic’s assistant while Burl tries to figure out the issue with our rear end.  Wish us luck – and please pray, pray, pray!!!

If you’re reading this blog and wondering when I’m going to insist we head for home, let me assure you I’ve had the same thoughts!
