I’ve had a Moxie weekend seeing shows both Friday and Saturday evenings. One was an A+ – the other flunked!
Burl had to work a concert at the Shrine on Friday night so I treated myself to “Sunshine Cleaning” since I wasn’t sure if he’d like it and it’s only slated to be shown through this Thursday. Amy Adams and Alan Arkin didn’t disappoint as they both turned in spectacular performances along with Emily Blunt. The movie was pure delight and I left the theatre wondering why it only showed for one week at one of our local big-box cinemas. Then I remembered the local movie clientele – question answered!
I had seen the previews for “Gomorrah” and read the hype that it was the best Mafia movie EVER – it won the top prize at Cannes, won the equivalent of an Oscar in Europe, etc. Burl knows how much I love, love, love Mafia movies to we had traditional date night last night – dinner and a movie.
For dinner we went to Thai House which is a favorite place where we seldom dine – not sure why we never go there, it’s just some place we think of more for lunch than dinner. Burl got his favorite, mango chicken, and I stuffed myself on yummy Pad Thai.
We got to the Moxie, bought our tickets, and went into an empty theatre with 5 minutes left to spare before it started. At movie time we were still the only ones there and I was thinking how fun it would be to have a private showing and be able to talk during a movie without having to be considerate of other patrons.
Unfortunately, just as the previews ended, a young man came in and just as the opening credits rolled, another young man joined us. We figure they took in $30 to show the movie to the 4 of us – plus whatever we bought at the snack bar at intermission.
Dan Chilton mentioned in his intro that many have found the first half very confusing but it all comes together in the second half. At intermission he was right on target – there were several plots circulating throughout the movie and we were starting to get a grasp on who were the good guys (not too many) and who weren’t (everybody else)!
Unfortunately, by time the movie ended, we were still semi-confused. I think the only reason it held my attention was to see how it was all going to weave together but it just didn’t happen.
Win some – “Sunshine Cleaning”.
Lose some – “Gomorrah”.
