This evening we were asked to be judges for the Pizza on Parade event hosted by the Rotary Club of Nixa. It was their second year for this fundraiser and this club had their act together – it was well organized and they had bouncy houses for the kids and chair massages for the adults.
And pizza!
The six of us who were judges were sequestered in a room and given paper on which to write our notes which were to help us make our final choices. The first contest was for Best Value and each of the five pizzerias submitted a large pepperoni pizza. We were told the price of each and were to assess how well we liked the pizza in relation to the “value” we felt one received for the price.
We knew we were going to taste a lot of pizza so it was easy to stick to just one bite – and in some cases, one very small bite – of each offering. For instance, one of the pepperoni pizzas was literally swimming in grease so I first had to de-grease it with a paper napkin before trying a small nibble. No go for me!
The winner: Godfather’s Pizza!
Next were the speciality pizzas – but we didn’t realize that each of the five contestants would submit 3-4 pizzas for our tasting pleasure. Talk about pizza overload.
My favorite pizza was the very first one – a thin crust BBQ chicken pizza with lots of onions, plenty of cheese and chicken and a sweet BBQ sauce. I ate the entire square! After that, each piece I tasted was in comparison to that pizza.
We ate spinach artichoke with feta cheese, supreme meat, Santa Fe (with a VERY strange sauce), Hawaiian (my 2nd choice), and some others I can’t remember.
In the final analysis, the majority of the judges voted by secret ballot along with my choice – the BBQ Chicken pizza from Papa John’s.
I came away not only stuffed with pizza but also with gift certificates for two 1-hour massages that I won in a raffle. Burl seemed to think I’d share but I told him the extra massage goes to my wonderful handyman.
