In today’s installment of “The Bathroom Remodel that Seemingly Will Never End” we learn a new dance step. You take one step forward by installing the sub-flooring
and then you take two steps back when you realize the ceiling over the shower/tub has to be completely re-done and the walls need another coat.
I painted the ceiling earlier in the week and remarked to Burl that some of the texture was coming off. I suspected it was peeling because it’s over the shower and gets more humidity but Burl’s suggestion was to put on a second coat and he assured me that would take care of it. It didn’t.
That’s when I discovered that his friend Ron, a former professional painter, had advised him to strip off the textured ceiling in the first place and he ignored Ron’s advice. GRRRRRR! So he stripped most of it, sanded it down and I applied another coat of paint yesterday. As soon as the paint went on, what was left of the textured ceiling started peeling off. Obviously Burl’s half-assed way of doing it wasn’t going to work. So I removed every little bit of the texture, sanded it again and today put two more coats of paint on the ceiling. It looks great.
You know how they always tell you to paint the ceiling first? Well there’s a reason for that advice. It’s easy to cut the wall paint up against the ceiling but next to impossible to get a good paint cut against the wall from the ceiling. So – the place where the ceiling meets the wall looks crappy and needs to be re-done with another coat of wall paint. I thought I could just do a small area until Burl got a few dents in the wall while installing the sub-floor and they need to be patched.
Might as well give the whole darned thing a third coat – had to buy another gallon of paint anyway.
It’s frustrating but in the grand scheme of things, an hour or two of painting will be well worth the finished product. But I’m going to wait until the floor tile is installed……..just in case!
I asked for an approximate time line yesterday and he told me we’d be done in time to host a dinner for friends from Talaquepaque on April 29th.
Until then, I’m keeping my daytime schedule relatively open to play Handyman’s Assistant.
