Today was the local election for Springfield city mayor, city council and the Springfield R-12 School Board. Since we live outside the city limits, we were not eligible to vote for mayor or city council but could vote for the school board candidates.
We forgot to vote.
I really feel awful because it’s my feeling that if you don’t vote, you give up the right to bitch about the decisions that those elected officials make. Sure, I know I don’t have kids in the public schools (and never did – they went to private school) but I’m still a taxpayer and these students are the future of our community.
Never mind that the two of the three who won would have had my votes – and the one who lost was behind by a significant number of votes. It’s the principle of the whole thing that bugs me. And we even talked about how we mustn’t forget to vote today.
I guess my brain was hard-wired to bathroom interiors instead of more far-reaching decisions for our community.
I promise – it won’t happen again.
