Friday Night Fish Fry   Leave a comment

If you want to experience the Lenten season in a time-honored Catholic way, nothing beats the Friday Night Fish Fry.  Our friends Ron and Barb invited us to their parish in Marshfield last night and even though fried fish is pretty far down on my list of stuff I want to eat, Burl loves it.  Plus it was a great opportunity to visit with Ron and Barb.

The event was pure small-town Americana – held in the basement of the parish hall with fish (yeah – the menu had baked fish too which was delicious), french fries, slaw, green beans and a whole array of homemade desserts.  All ages were there and everyone seemed to know everyone else and it didn’t matter if they were members of the parish or not – it was community.

We spent the rest of the evening visiting with Ron and Barb and as we drove home I reflected on how the core values of family, church, community and friendships are what really matter.  That’s not a new thought for me but if you listen to the news long enough you start to wonder if those “things” are on the back burner while everyone tries to deal with what’s wrong with our country instead of what’s right.

I’m blessed.  I know it.
