It’s so nice to be home again! Safely too! Much as I love to travel, nothing beats coming home and knowing I get to sleep in my own bed tonight.
Ralph and I got so much done over the last few days – didn’t move much stuff to the new place but did lots of cleaning at the new house and packed a major portion at their current place although every time we taped up a box it seemed there was that much more to do! I don’t envy them the physical move but they’re young and full of energy and with the help of professional movers to do the furniture and appliances, I know it will go smoothly.
Of course the most fun I had was playing with the girls! Yesterday morning I dropped Julia at school and then Lydia and I spent the morning together so Ralph could run errands and do things like buy new mattresses and pick out light fixtures for the girls’ bathroom. Lydia and I went to the library for story time and then sat down and read books and played games together. She has such an intense attention span for just turning three and she certainly loves her some books. Yeah!
Since it was raining we went to the small mall and I let her play at the play place and burn off some energy before we picked Julia up from school. They were starving by time we got home and that’s when I realized I had forgotten to take a snack with me for Lydia – so glad she was a good trooper.
Ralph and I worked while Lydia napped and Julia had quiet time and then we took them to their gymnastics lessons. It was fun to watch them tumble and turn all around the gym on the trampolines, bars and beams and of course they looked adorable in their leotards.
Today I stopped in Lee’s Summit on the way home and had a nice visit with my favorite uncle. My aunt Dorothy died over 2 years ago but at the age of 86, Bob has a girlfriend and it’s often hard to find time to visit him because they are so busy. They both live at John Knox Village (he always makes sure I know they have separate apartments! Like I care!) and take advantage of every cultural opportunity available in the Kansas City area plus do lots of traveling.
He told me he’s trying not to be such a “sarcastic bastard” and I assured him his efforts are working and he really has mellowed with age! Bob and my dad used to have a love/hate friendship but managed to get along for the sake of my mom and my aunt who were sisters. They did provide plenty of entertainment on family occasions when I was growing up – especially when one of them had too much gin!
When I got home, Burl had cooked dinner for us. He knows that after a long drive the last thing I want to do is go somewhere plus he figured (correctly) I didn’t have a menu planned for us either. What a guy!
It’s fun to go but today it was more fun to come home to my guys – Burl and Mulligan.
