Last evening my friend Ann invited me to join her book club for an event titled “Women We Know.” Her book club consists of 8 members who have been together for about 15 years with no plans to expand their membership – in fact, one mutual friend called the group “hermetically sealed.”
But they decided they wanted to include their friends for an evening and have drinks, dinner, conversation and a book exchange. Each person was asked to bring 2 books to trade – I took Hotel New Hampshire by John Irving and The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver and came home with the hatbox baby by Carrie Brown (recommendation of a friend) and The Shack by William Paul Young. I have read The Shack but when it came time to choose our second book there were few that I hadn’t read and since I want to re-read this book, decided to get my own copy.
The evening was a fantastic blend of stimulating conversation with women who love books along with seeing some familiar faces and making new friends – what a perfect evening!
During dinner we talked about our favorite books and one lady said we all should read Annie Freeman’s Fabulous Traveling Funeral by Kris Radish – turns out I just bought the book yesterday at Well Fed Head! I was looking for something to read on vacation and this one looked intriguing. Apparently it’s much deeper than it appears, but in an excellent way.
I came home with a list of new books to read and a desire to climb into bed and read while the rain hit the sunlight in our bedroom.
And that’s what I did!
Sounds fun!! I have read several books by Kris Radish, very interesting, and yes, deeper than you might think–all about women and their friendships.
