One of my faithful few readers, dear pal Vickie, is blegging for my comments on the dress FLOTUS wore to the inaugural balls. Since I don’t watch television (well, except for “Desperate Housewives”), I didn’t catch all the media hype about “The Dress” but over the weekend I saw a full-length view of it in the paper.
Burl saw it first and compared it to “something from a Salvation Army Thrift Store.” My opinion is not quite that harsh but it really didn’t do much for me – I loved the one-shoulder style but all the little tufts of fabric really turned me off.
I do like that she chose an unknown designer and also like that she shops at places like J. Crew and White House/Black Market – and also does lots of shopping for the family on the Internet. Those tidbits of info make me think she’s an independent woman who knows what she likes and goes for it. With few exceptions, I think she always appears to be very stylish and seems to know what fashions work for her and her daughters.
What was disturbing was reading that a group of Black Artists are ticked off that she didn’t wear a creation from a black designer. Sounds like one more call for affirmative action which is exactly what this country DOESN”T need.
Hi Anne, Thanks for the wonderful encouragement! I have been scrolling through some of your posts and I must say that you are a really talented and entertaining writer! It doesn’t surprise me at all that Sarah Kerner turned you on to She’s Crafty. I always find her to be rather inspirational.
Where did you get a sewing machine that came with free classes?
I think that it is so neat that you are sewing American Girl clothing. I had the Samantha doll when I was young. Back then, AG was owned by a company called “The Pleasant Company” (before they were bought by Mattel) They only had 3 dolls: Kirsten, Samantha and Molly and no one had heard of them. I am truly amazed at what has happened to those little known dolls! My own Mom used to sew clothing for Samantha and I was always amazed by it and completely appreciative of it. I know that you made your granddaughters day!
