Spontaneity   Leave a comment

I’m a structured person – I lived by my Franklin planner and Blackberry for years going to whatever meetings my secretary or I had added to my day and personally filling in the blanks for the non-work hours.  It’s not that I don’t like being spontaneous – it just doesn’t come naturally to me.  However, with the transition to Life 2.0 I vowed to break the “if it’s not on my agenda, I can’t do it” MO.

Case in point – earlier today, friend Sarah sent me an email telling me that Allegiant was running a 15-hour, $15 sale which included flights between here and Phoenix.  Within minutes I was on their website and it didn’t take long for us to book a trip to Phoenix in a couple of weeks.  Now it helped that we had already set aside this time for a road trip but still, I gave myself snaps for changing our destination and jumping on the cheap fares before they vanished at 3 p.m.

For the record, the “posted fares” were $29 from here to Phoenix and $15 to return – a total of $44, right?  Well one would think so – but we each need to take a bag (add $30 each), we need to select a seat ($32 each – never could find a way to just settle for open seating), we booked on-line (another $11.50 each – beats driving to the airport) plus all the security fees and taxes.  Final cost per person was $134 which is still a damned fine airfare from here.  Plus we get to bunk with Mike, Annie and Devin and with all our savings, we’ll just rent a car to tool around town when we get there.  But wait, there’s more – we can borrow Mike and Annie’s golf clubs!

We came close to booking another trip for the last week of January to see the FBR Open but realized we’d be going out a mere 2 weeks after we return from the holidays so we’ll give our kids a little break from the Old Farts.  Now it’s time to look for another warm spot in the middle of winter.

The rest of the day went pretty much as scheduled – drop off items for recycling, Weight Watchers (+1.8 pounds in 2 weeks but still under goal weight), Rotary (regular meeting and committee meeting), 30 minutes of cardio at the gym, meet cousin Carl and his wife Jill while they had an early dinner (in town to watch their son play football against Central High School) and then a Rotary Happy Hours event.  That’s almost more than I did in Life 1.0 but it was a lot more fun.

Time to remind my dear hubby that we are playing golf together tomorrow and WE ARE PLAYING FOR FUN!
