Saturday Morning Musings:
- Ed and Agnes departed shortly after 7 this morning – they were on a mission to get home by 5 and since the drive from our house to theirs is right at 10 hours, they left before sunrise. We had a great visit and look forward to seeing them next fall in Chicago. Listening to Burl and Ed banter back and forth and watching them page through an old photo album with pictures of their parents and memories of their childhood brought thoughts of my sister, Susie, to mind quite often over the last few days. I know I’ll never again have a summer afternoon at the lake just to lounge on the deck while we read, drink and talk but I can replay it in my mind. Just writing about her now brings tears – I miss her so much after almost 13 years. I’m just thankful that Tammy and Ralph are best friends to each other and hope that 30 years from now, Julia and Lydia will be the same way.
- We missed seeing Sarah Palin yesterday although we passed up 3 different offers for VIP tickets from friends. The rally was at noon and would have taken several hours out of the day so we declined – she has our vote! I did offer my SP t-shirt to friend Allison but she had one to wear. Allison is in her mid-20′s and was my summer intern several years ago. She has since shelved her BS in Finance for a BS in Nursing and now that she’s living in Springfield again we meet regularly for coffee. She is a very intelligent young woman who “gets it” on the long-range view of politics and the disastrous effects that a Democratic presidential victory may mean for our country. In addition, she is quite savvy about the medical community and has some very intelligent and progressive ideas for that industry. I’ll be writing a reference for her today as she plans to start her master’s degree in Nursing Leadership next semester.
- It’s time to close the pool. Damn. I love just seeing the cool blue pool when I walk through the living room or sit on the deck even though I haven’t been in it for a couple of weeks. However, we know it’s futile, expensive and wasteful to keep pouring chemicals into it just to keep it looking nice. So – today when it’s warmer we will get the cover out of storage and officially declare that summer is over. Not that we didn’t already know it with 36 degree temps this morning.
- One of the highlights of the Andy Williams Show last evening (in addition to his pro-McCain remarks!) was this video which is now on YouTube. I had forgotten that the song in the video was originally a music-only part of a Pepsi commercial – then words were added and it was a hit for Andy in the 60′s. This ad aired in the UK last year and soon DJs were being asked to play the full song, resulting in Andy’s biggest hit ever for that country. After he showed the original ad last evening, he then showed a re-make which unfortunately is not on YouTube – but in it, the driver pulls over to the side of the street and plants a big one on Andy – and in the last scene, he drives up next to their car and while her boyfriend watches, she gets in the car and drives off with Andy. According to Andy, the re-make is real. Who knows?
- For about 10 seconds this morning I thought our washing machine was broken – and then I realized it was just on PAUSE between cycles. Damn. I really want a new set but am too practical to replace the washer and dryer before one of them croaks. Guess that’s a personal problem.
- It’s time to switch shoes and clothing from warm-weather to cold-weather in my closet. So I’ll use this cool morning to sort through and see what I won’t be wearing again (i.e. business suits, non-cool high heels, etc.) and do some closet purging. Probably need to hold a Wine and Clothing Party for my friends – I supply the wine, they shop my stuff. Everyone is a happy camper.
- Need to plan our fall trip – we have reserved dates on our calendar so just need to figure out where we are going.
- Gas was $2.09 a gallon last evening – how low will it go?
Onward and upward………………
