Class Reunion   Leave a comment

We just returned from a couple of days in Clinton, MO where we attended Burl’s class reunion.  They had a cocktail party/reception at the new country club on Friday night and then a banquet at the Elk’s Club downtown last evening.  We had attended his reunion 5 years ago so I did remember a few of his classmates and their spouses but since I was one of a few who didn’t hail from Clinton I sat on the sidelines during the “remember when” conversations, of which there were many!

Burl and I both agree we were on the fringes of the popular crowds in high school – we knew all the popular kids and had played with them growing up, attended dance classes and birthday parties and in many instances, our parents were mutual friends – but neither of us were class officers or sports stars or cheerleaders which were the main criteria for being in the “in” crowd.

Fortunately, time erases some of those barriers and he was eagerly recruited for a golf game yesterday morning and of course had his clubs with him – too bad it rained all day turning the golf course into a lake.  Last evening we sat with 2 other couples at the banquet and later one of them invited us to their home for a drink along with a few others so Burl didn’t feel like a total social outcast!  Our late night conversation turned morbid as one guy started telling stories of his part-time job picking up bodies for a local funeral home – one other guy mentioned that 20 years ago the hot reunion topic was sex and now it’s death!

We had considered a drive to Kansas City yesterday but with the nasty weather we opted to stay in exciting Clinton – it’s a good thing the hotel had a passable fitness center so I could workout which helped my sanity.  After lunch at Applebee’s we took in a matinee of “The Women” – not on my list of movies to see but it turned out to be a great chick flick that Burl even enjoyed.  He has told me before he likes smart (and smart ass!) and assertive women and this movie delivered.  It was interesting that there was not a single male in the movie – including the extras.

Now we’re home, unpacked and Mulligan is waiting patiently for me to get off the computer and take him for a walk – me thinks I had best comply!
