It’s official – I’m now on the government dole for the rest of my life. My first Social Security check is in the bank as of today (when I go to my on-line bank I can see it “sitting” there) and at my age, the chances of there being sufficient funding during my lifetime are pretty good.
I’m really not a proponent of the Social Security system as it’s currently structured. It made sense when FDR started it before I was born but I think the age for entitlement should have been indexed from the git-go meaning I’d have another 10+ years before I could receive any $. I also think workers should have had the option long ago to opt out if they could fund their retirement on their own – and I also feel that after someone has received what they paid in plus reasonable compounded interest, the full amount should be taxable. But hey, I’m a conservative Republican who believes in personal responsibility instead of relying on Big Brother to meet my every want!
Do my views mean I will send the money back? Short answer: NO! Long answer: HELL NO! I had no say in what was withheld from my earnings since I was in my teens so I may be a fiscal conservative but hopefully I’m not dumb. However, I do worry about our government’s (Congress!) ability to adequately continue to fund this give-away for future generations – especially since illegal aliens are now eligible for benefits along with every other group who just might vote the way a particular politician wants.
Enough of my soapbox for today – can’t be late for my class at the gym!
