Am I allowed to observe Labor Day if I’m not working? Just wondering……..because when every day is like a holiday it’s hard to define Labor Day since it doesn’t involve candy, fireworks, turkey, gifts or endless football and a hangover! However, it does have significance as the last official weekend of the summer so our golf group gathered yesterday at the home of friends Barb and Ron to eat, drink and play a wicked game of Mexican Train.
We also discussed the possibility of a road trip this fall – the choices are narrowed to Gulf Shores, AL and Myrtle Beach, SC with the latter option seeming to gather the most interest. Somehow I got put in charge of the trip planning even though I’m the one who golfs the least but Barb assures me she will join me in all the beach-walking, shopping and lunching I want to do!
Today I finished the last bit of staining on the deck – WHEW! I know there are some touch-up spots to do and I want to clean out under the deck (something we should have done before we started re-doing it) but it’s nice to have the job 99.99% finished. I told Burl I was going to mow the back yard but he insisted I needed to learn how to work properly – after a couple of hours of staining he said I needed to grab something to read and get in the pool. So being the obedient wife I am, I followed his advice and trust me, laying in the pool with a good book was a lot more fun than mowing.
About 4:00 we met fellow motorcyclists Walter and Sandy and headed for Aurora via every back road one can imagine. The countryside was beautiful and the normal one-hour drive took two and a half but we didn’t care. It was fun to cruise along and enjoy the scenery on a summer evening. We ate dinner at Hawgwild BBQ which featured a guy playing bluesy jazz on his guitar for our dining entertainment and then headed home on Highway 60 – not nearly as scenic but certainly quicker.
Back to “work” tomorrow – 7:15 Rotary committee meeting in the morning but tomorrow night is the September edition of Women of Substance. Stay tuned for a scintillating post!
