Yesterday I read that oil was up $5 a barrel due to speculation that the latest tropical storm, Gustav, will knock out some oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. I figured that with oil prices going up coupled with Labor Day, gas prices were sure to rise so on my way to Harter House, I stopped at Sam’s and filled up the car.
Today Burl did a long motorcycle ride, stopped at Sam’s on the way home and filled up – still $3.29 a gallon at Sam’s but he had already seen escalating prices elsewhere in town. He came home, got the red truck and returned to Sam’s to fill-er-up, then returned for the white truck and repeated the process. He walked in the door about 3:45 and told me what he’d done and by 4:00 I had a phone call from the fraud unit of Discover Card regarding “unusual activity” on our card!
I asked the lady if her call concerned several purchases for gas at Sam’s and she laughed and confirmed that was exactly why she was calling. As soon as I explained, she understood completely – she’s in Phoenix and said their price just jumped from around $3.60 to $3.70 a gallon!
Usually I’m not a fan of Big Brother watching but in this instance it’s nice to know they are looking out for my benefit and trying to stop credit card fraud.
In fact, should it happen again, they will send a text message if they can’t reach me!
