Today I’m blogging from the Rotary International Cyber-Cafe. I just attended the opening plenary session which featured the presentation of flags of all countries where Rotary has clubs – a very impressive opening ceremony which made me realize how rusty my geography is since I’ve never heard of some of these countries, especially ones in South Africa. After inspiring remarks from the RI president we were treated to a concert by the Canadian Brass. They were fabulous and ended their concert with a rendition of a blend of Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” intertwined with “When The Saints Go Marching In”. When they announced their piece I couldn’t imagine how it would sound but it was fabulous.
Yesterday we drove into LA and got settled into my home for the week, Kawada Hotel – a little boutique hotel located about 2 miles from the LA Convention Center but that didn’t stop me from walking here this morning instead of taking the shuttle. We rode over to the Convention Center yesterday afternoon so I could get registered, then walked down Figuero Street and had dinner – then went to see “Sex And The City” which did not disappoint at all – Burl even enjoyed it thoroughly.
He was up bright and early this morning heading south on the bike to San Diego where he arrived by 8:30 in time to take daughter Stacey out for breakfast. They will get to spend Father’s Day together and also celebrate her first 39th birthday which is tomorrow. I used the early morning for a long walk near the hotel – then went back to my room with my Sunday LA Times (a REAL newspaper as opposed to the fake one we have at home) and a cup of Starbucks and enjoyed kicking back and reading the paper.
Time now to take my 2 drink tickets and head off to a reception.
