Public Speaking   1 comment

Dear hubby is known in our family for being anything but soft-spoken (especially when on his cell phone…but that’s another topic!) so it was bound to happen – he’d be overheard in public talking about someone.  Last evening we dined at Mikayla’s Grille at Millwood Country Club – we had a gift certificate that was about to expire and since the club has gone private, figured we’d better get on the stick and use it.

We were having a drink before dinner and Burl started telling me about his dentist, Cheryl, who had met a guy while on vacation, had a whirlwind courtship and ended up in a brief marriage – the wedding and reception both taking place at Millwood.  Since this was before I knew him and I wasn’t his date for the occasion, he proceeded to tell me a few details of this romance and their split within the first year.  But he mentioned he couldn’t remember the guy’s last name.  All of a sudden, a lady was running toward him shouting “it was Smith – remember, Smith!” – and she started hugging his neck and they both were laughing.  I realized it was Cheryl herself!

She and her date were sitting at the table behind us but because her back was to us when we came in, we didn’t see her!  When he started talking, she quickly realized who he was and who he was talking about but decided to let him continue for a few minutes just to be ornery.  Fortunately he didn’t say anything he wouldn’t have said to her face but I think it taught him a valuable lesson.  The four of us had a good laugh over the incident and I’m hoping she doesn’t hold grudges since he’s scheduled for some dental work in a couple of weeks!

Now if I can just get him to turn down the volume when he talks on his cell phone in public.  This incident may be the impetus it takes to make that happen.

  1. Oops!! Well, at least he was talking about someone he liked, and it ended well. But yes, I too am married to a loud talker- and if that hasn’t happened to him yet, I’m sure it will!
On another note, sounds like you had a wonderful Mother’s Day, yay for you– nice way to end a weekend.
