My Girl Scout meetings took me to Dexter, Missouri yesterday and today. Now I’ve passed through this little town before on the way to somewhere else but don’t think I’ve even stopped at the local McDonald’s – and the only thing that comes to mind when I think of Dexter is that I had a 7th grade science teacher who was from there (don’t even ask how I remember such useless info when I can’t remember my home phone number some days!). Anyway, the Girl Scouts provided the finest transportation, food and lodging that corporate compliance allows for a board member so we stayed in the Dexter Inn last evening.
After a day of driving and then meeting (and eating!) we were ready for some relaxation and alcohol therapy but options were limited in Dexter. Fortunately (?) the lovely Dexter Inn was situated right next door to Robbie D’s – the town watering hole. We stepped inside this establishment and when we finally caught our breath from all the smoke, decided we definitely would get a to-go order and retire to one of our rooms for happy hour which is what we did. When I got ready to bed down for the night, I discovered that the motel room door – which opened onto the parking lot shared w/Robbie D’s – had a dead bolt lock that wouldn’t bolt. To make matters worse, the sounds from across the lot were getting rowdier by the minute.
As luck would have it, a kind desk clerk located another smoke-free room for me and got me settled in a more secure location where I crashed for the night. Friend Tina and I were up bright and early for a brisk walk before another round of meetings followed by the long drive home where we all debriefed the meeting.
Looking at the accomplishments for the weekend I started and completed 90% of a spring purse that will be felted – mostly navy with some bright yellow stripes. – just have to decide how I want the straps and then I can finish it. I started another knitting project (gift for a friend) and got about 20% of the way into it, finished reading “The Appeal” by John Grisham (not as boring and predictable as most of his recent stuff), read the latest 417 magazine paying special attention to Tammy’s spring fashion tips (check out the touch of yellow which is the hot spring color) and finished the most recent copy of Newsweek. Of yeah, I also participated in about 14 hours of meetings while my butt grew quite weary and attached to an uncomfortable chair!
It’s good to be home – Mulligan got a short walk in the late afternoon balmy weather – and I reckon it will be a long time before I stay in Dexter again. Little did I know when I signed onto this Girl Scout project that I’d get the scenic tour of southern Missouri!
