Ice Storm Deja Vu   1 comment

It’s beginning to look a lot like January 2007 – trees bowed from the weight of ice, limbs breaking off, power outages – not exactly my kind of weather but then Mother Nature didn’t call for my approval first.  I knew exactly what kind of weather day we were going to have when I heard the sound of sleet on the skylight over our bed – so I got up a little early and headed out to work hoping to avoid traffic.  With schools and government offices cancelled, the traffic was light although my short sojourn on the freeway let me know there were a few SUVs that figured 70 MPH was acceptable.  Not wanting to become a hood ornament for one of them, I got off at the first exit and took the longer route but made it to work early and safely.

The boss decided we should all get a head start home tonight and luckily the roads still weren’t bad.  However, it is now raining with more sleet predicted tonight and we are cautiously ready for a power and water outage should one occur.  As soon as I got home I took a shower and dinner is cooking as I write.  Every room has a candle burning in it and we have buckets of water to use for flushing if necessary.  Even have plenty of wood available for the fire in the living room should we need the warmth while we sleep on our blowup mattress tonight.

We can only hope that being prepared is insurance for the utilities to stay on throughout the next couple of days.  Warm weather is predicted for Wednesday but we may be chilly and in the dark before then!  Here’s hoping son-in-law Steve finally made it to Scottsdale Phoenix (sorry Tammy) today where I’m sure he’s not concerned with ice and sleet.

  1. First of all, Steve’s going to Phoenix, not Scottsdale. Second, he’s not there yet. Last I heard they were waiting to see if they could change airlines to make all the connections and get there tonight. Worst case, they drive back, but I think they’ll end up making it. I’ll keep you posted.
