Dinner tonight with friends Vickie and Robin – this month at Clary’s, next month Ocean Zen. No matter where we dine just having a dinner date on the calendar a month out cheers me each month – and they are such neat women. Last month we decided we needed a name for our trio – I had thought about it off and on but then just knew it would happen – one of us would come up with the perfect moniker. Tonight Robin made a statement about “women of substance” and I said “that’s us!” – so we now have a name. Here’s a random recap of our dinner conversation :
-
Congrats to Vickie’s daughter Hannah who is the Student of the Month at her middle school. I haven’t yet had the pleasure of meeting Hannah but from what her mom says about her – and knowing what a cool mom Hannah has – I know she must be a chip off the old block.
-
“Ibid” can be used conversationally – it’s not limited to literary application.
-
I learned a new term for lesbian – a female who “plays for the other team”.
-
Seen recently on a car in Springfield “Vote for Monical Lewinsky’s ex-boyfriend’s wife for President”…….hmmmmmmmmmm…..now who could that be?
-
Vickie doesn’t mind giving up an evening of “Survivor” or “Lost” to meet for dinner – good thing, Vic – we’d have to boot you out of the club and talk about you!
-
Our waiter, Ben, evidently thinks that flattering ladies will increase the amount we tip! Worked for me! He determined our ages as 31, 32 and 37 – which we found quite amusing since they are both the same age as daughter Tammy. And no, I didn’t believe him – but he was a fun waiter and quite accommodating to us.
-
After years in a private office, Robin now loves being in a cubicle where she is meeting more co-workers and enjoying her new job. She has also become quite the techno-geek spouting off terms that were more like a foreign language to me – but the good news is she loves what she’s doing after a sabbatical and job search last year.
-
The Miss America contest has lost its appeal for us – even Robin who was a finalist for Miss Missouri several years ago (and a judge the year our daughter-in-law Annie got the title) was appalled by the process this year – and the swimsuit choices.
Time to go throw some warm clothes in a suitcase as we head north in the morning – destination, Des Moines to help Lydia celebrate her 2nd birthday this weekend. Low on Saturday is supposed to be around zero and even though it will be mild here, I wouldn’t miss this event for anything.
PS to Robin and Vickie – the movie “Ben” (the name of a rat) was released in 1972 and the title song was nominated for an Oscar in 1973 and won a Golden Globe in 1973 for Best Original Song. Since waiter Ben thinks you are 31 and 32, you obviously had not yet been born in 1972!
