After being in Phoenix this past week and seeing Super Bowl hype ad nauseum on the local TV stations I really settled in this evening to watch the commercials with little regard for the game. I didn’t really have a favorite team although after hearing that the NE Patriots had spied on other teams this year it just didn’t seem right for them to possibly become the first team with a perfect 19-0 season – plus I always like an underdog – so I was rooting for the NY Giants. Figured that with a 12 point spread, at least Burl could win his bet with brother Ed (where’s our $5, Ed?).
By halftime I was pretty much over the commercials – Budweiser had a few that I liked – especially the one with the Clydesdale and the Dalmatian because I’m a sucker for animals. But most of them left me rather flat so I figured the 2nd half was pretty much a good time to watch the game with about 5% concentration while I also read – until the last few minutes when NY pulled ahead, then NE rallied back into the lead. Fortunately Eli Manning and the Giants staged a great scoring drive that ended in a touchdown plus ate up about 4 minutes on the clock and they were back on top. With <40 seconds to go, the NY defense hung tough and prevented NE from scoring again and sent the dismal Patriots streaming into the locker room while the Giants celebrated on the field.
I have watched the majority of these games and even remember where we were and who won the first one although the term “Super Bowl” had not yet been coined. Tammy was just a baby when the Chiefs met the Packers in 1967. But tonight’s game goes down as one of the best in my book – maybe we should have stayed in Phoenix and ponied up $2400 each for tickets – NOT!!!
