My Kind Of Meeting   Leave a comment

If you read this blog on November 18th you’re already familiar with my activities of realigning the local Girl Scout council with 4 other Missouri councils.  It’s a year-long undertaking and my part ends on 9/30/08 but between now and then, I’ll have my share of meetings.  The last two days were case in point as we gathered in Joplin for the January meeting.  Now my life is full of meetings at work each week and using a vacation day for another meeting doesn’t hit my Top 10 list but I did find a way to enjoy the meeting – KIP!  For the non-knitters in the group, that’s the common abbreviation for Knitting in Public.  I know better than to even try such a thing at the day job – after all, I’m being paid to give them my undevoted attention and they allegedly have bought my brain power for that time.  But when you’re a volunteer, I figure all bets are off!

The way I look at it, I really got a bit of a knitting vacation except I also contributed to the success of our weekend so I masqueraded as a devoted volunteer!  I finished 2 projects (a lime green hooded poncho for Isabella and a yellow bunny buddy baby blanket for the granddaughter of a friend) and started another.  I’m actually down to one project now and know that it will be done before we return from our Phoenix trip so I need to delve into my stash and determine the next project – or go through my patterns and books to pick a new one and head for the yarn store.  And to think, this can be my life after June!

Tonight we headed to the movies and since we were running tight on time and the ticket line was long, had to save “The Bucket List” for another night and instead saw “Juno”.  I thought the movie had its moments of brilliance – Ellen Page is a delightful actress who had some excellent writing going for her title character.  Jennifer Garner was so-so and her character never really rose to the emotion I anticipated but since I didn’t expect much from her, I wasn’t disappointed.

The movie had some hilarious lines but I probably missed some of the humor since I’m neither a 16 y/o girl or even the mother of one.  I think the age differences between Juno and me also gave me a different take on the movie than others might see it.  I really liked the support she got from her family during her pregnancy but wonder if immature teenage girls may view the movie’s idea of preganancy as not that big a deal – Juno still went to school, still had her best friend and had few episodes of negativity shown to her by others.  I won’t spoil the ending if you haven’t seen it, but I was looking for some kind of morality statement and it wasn’t there – but there were poignant moments of love and friendship.

Now it’s time to finish Loving Frank since I have 2 more books on reserve at the library.
