The 2008 presidential campaign is officially underway tonight in Iowa with the early returns showing Obama and Huckabee the winners. My response is “how come we get 50 choices for Miss America and just a handful for president?” This year I have no clear-cut favorite of either party unless you count Ron Paul and I know he’s way too much like a Libertarian-like Republican to ever garner the votes to be president. While I like his ideas of smaller government, I realize that right now it’s too late to turn around the Titanic when the iceberg is looming on the horizon. I hope that by time the election is held in November I have a favorite instead of voting for the one I dislike the least as has been the case in recent elections. Going back to when I was 21, I have always voted for the same party in the presidential election but this year I may turn the corner.
Ralph and Blair had plans to attend their caucus in Des Moines tonight although when we spoke earlier in the day she was still on the fence of which candidate to support. They have been innundated with calls from candidates and/or their volunteers for the last few weeks. It has gotten so bad that they now check caller ID and when they know it’s a political call, they allow Julia who is 4 1/2 to answer the phone and handle the call!
I fear it’s going to be a very long political year and the real winners will be the advertising agencies and the media but alas, not the American public.
