Off The Treadmill

The fast and furious pace I endured at work last week continued into the weekend.  I left very early on Friday morning along with 2 others from our Girl Scout council to go to Cape Girardeau for meetings on our council realignment.  The Girls Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) have decided that 300+ councils shall be condensed to slightly more than 100 and our council started this daunting process in October.  By 9/30/08, 5 councils in Missouri comprising over half the geographic area of our state will become one mega-council.  The task of bringing this goal to fruition is spearheaded for a 20-member council consisting of each council’s CEO, Board Chair and 2 other volunteers – I fall into the “other” category since I’m currently the 1st Vice Chair on the board.

Our 2-day meeting in Cape was the first time for us all to convene and I was quite impressed with the wide variety of skills that were present along with a “can-do” attitude that reminds me why I often refer back to what I learned in my own Girl Scout days – not only the practical skills (and yes, I did actually earn the Cooking badge!) but the leadership and relationship skills too.  As expected, I’m co-chairing the Finance Committee and my co-chair and I hit it off immediately – always a sign that the task to be done will be easier – and I know we have a good committee too which includes other council staff members and volunteers.

I drove back yesterday alone since I had a hubby-obligation last evening and had to leave early.  Normally I don’t really enjoy driving alone but yesterday I rather welcomed the respite from all the interactions I had over the last several days.  The afternoon was a gorgeous fall day and traversing the southern part of the state on US 60 presented fabulous fall scenery along with flat roads (I kept an eye on the GPS and when it read “80″ I slowed down!) and I was entertained by listening to the MU football team beat the KU Wildcats!  Go Mizzou!

We had a Shrine event last evening and by time we got home it was after 1:00 a.m. which is way past my bedtime.  Sleep was not an option this morning since we were greeters at church but fortunately we decided to pass on a motorcycle toy run and stay home.  I briefly thought about driving to Branson to shop but when I called Tammy to see if she’d be my cohort in shopping crime, she had already left on her own shopping trip - I took that as a sign from God to just stay home and enjoy the day!  Mulligan and I have been for a walk and I’ve sat in the porch swing on the deck and read so I’m getting maximum enjoyment out of what may be my last opportunity for wearing shorts for a long time.  Just a few hours of this kind of relaxing will have me ready for work tomorrow – after all, it’s a 3-day week and I think I can handle that!
