Today is my birthday….AND my wedding anniversary – two for the price of one! I like to say that Burl is the best birthday gift I ever received which he is but the dual celebration was not really by design – it came down to when we could get the church and when all of our kids were available to stand up with us – hence, a birthiversary!
The day started with granddaughter Julia calling to say “Happy Birthday Grammie, I love you” and quite frankly, that was a hard act for anyone to follow! I opened all my cards I had received in the mail and throughout the day received more cards and phone calls.
Tammy took me to lunch at Haruno (my choice) where we shared a couple of orders of sushi topped off with mango mochi for dessert which they comped since the service was so slow when they actually would have comped it anyway for my birthday – oh well! Tammy gave me a mushy card that I really appreciated – usually she gives me something very humorous but it meant a lot to get a card filled with sentiment and I knew she meant every word of it. I also got the book “Evolution of a Missouri Asylum – Fulton State Hospital 1851-2006″ which may sound like a strange gift but one I really wanted – and Tammy even refrained from reading it first! Having grown up in Fulton I was quite familiar with the east end of 5th Street (commonly referred to as Eastminster since Westminster College was located at the west end) and it was a book I might not have bought myself – so it’s a perfect gift!
Tonight Burl let me choose our dinner venue so we dined at Ocean Zen where we have gone for almost every anniversary. We had a leisurely dinner - got a bottle of Merlot, split a salad and then both got entrees while I added an order of sushi (can’t get too much in one day!). For Burl the only downer was the fact that they no longer treat special events with their special S’mores Fondue – even though we were quite full and not really hungry it was the principle of the thing for him – enough that he declared next year we need to go somewhere else. We’ll see – I have 365 days to change his mind!
Burl learned early on that there is a difference in birthday gifts and anniversary gifts so I never get slighted on my special day. However, our personal jeweler got behind on his gift to me so that has to wait for another day – and while I can see my wrapped birthday gift, he’s waiting to give it to me on Sunday night when we have our family celebration. I did get a beautiful card and we had a great time so I have no complaints. Five wonderful years – amazing what you can find on the Internet but I found him!
