First Friday   1 comment

Tonight was the First Friday Artwalk in downtown Springfield and the weather was perfect for strolling around in cords and a jean jacket.  Before we made it to downtown Springtown we stopped at Waverly House for opening night of their holiday exhibit and to see one of the winners in their juried art show.  Of course that winner was none other than daughter Tammy whose enamel pendant won the Purchase Award which meant it was purchased by the gallery and then auctioned off for charity this evening.  Tammy had another cool piece in the auction which was a one-of-a-kind sterling silver pendant with cutout holly berries and leaves.  The majority of her items on display at Waverly House are granulation – a technique that fascinates me for the detail she puts into them and I like that she creates her art not only on the front of her pendants and broaches but also on the back.  My favorite was a broach titled “Snow on Fallingwater” which did indeed remind me of something Frank Lloyd Wright would have designed.

We had planned to eat downtown at Blue Plate Special so were disappointed to hear that it had closed – we’re wondering if there’s a direct proportion to how much we like a place and how long it stays in business.  Makes us wonder!  But the parking gods smiled on us and we scored a great free parking place and ventured to Bailey’s which is a new casual dining spot.  Since it was featured in the Weekend section of the local paper we feared there would be a long wait but within just a couple of minutes we were seated and perusing their vast menu.  Burl immediately honed in on the gourmet beers which included Coors Light (YUK!) while I was pleased to see Boulevard Wheat.

The food did not disappoint in the least – while Burl enjoyed pot roast, I chowed down on a salad from their super salad bar which I paired with Penne Pasta PrimaVera.  Excellent food, great service, reasonable cost – we’d better hurry back for another meal before they decide to close!

Tammy also had a show at DB Design Salon and Art Gallery so we stopped by there to see more of her creations – these were primarily her mainstream items but still very beautiful.  I long ago got over thinking I can’t brag on my own kid – she’s very talented and while I can’t take credit for any of her creativity I appreciate the thought and effort that goes into each piece she designs.

  1. Thanks again for stopping by both shows. It’s such a rare occasion that I see you, I’m beginning to wonder if I need to introduce myself! Glad you were free and you had a good dinner. Now Steve and I need to check out Bailey’s!

You know, the “Snow on Fallingwater” piece is for sale and the money goes to a good cause – the artist! If it doesn’t sell by the time the show closes in late December, I think I’ll just keep it in my private collection.
