Too Close For Comfort

Burl’s daughter Stacey and her family live just north of San Diego and since they moved there last spring we haven’t had a chance to visit – which means we really had no idea how close they were to the raging forest fires that started over the weekend in the southern California area.  They called this morning and were in the process of voluntarily evacuating north – obvious choice since there are fires to the east and south of them and an ocean to the west!  By mid-afternoon they (and their 2 vehicles loaded with all they would hold) were settled into a hotel in Anaheim and they were heading to a local mall to catch a movie and take their minds off the fact that their neighborhood was under forced evacuation when they pulled out of their drive.  The news tonight is not encouraging with high winds flaming the fires centered in the area just north of San Diego where they live.

Our plans this week include a trip to San Diego on Friday – the tickets are bought, the hotel room reserved for Thursday night in Tulsa – but we know those can easily change.  Right now it’s more important for them to be safe.

While southern California continues with hot, dry weather, our Indian Summer literally changed overnight – yesterday it was sunny and 80, today rainy, dreary and barely 50.  Corey had a football game scheduled for 5:30 and I was not looking forward to sitting in the rain and cheering him on but the football gods blessed me with a last-minute reprieve as the game was canceled due to weather!  Burl was enroute to pick me up from work and suggested we meet for dinner – he probably thought I was sick when I said I really just wanted to get home and I’d fix something for us to eat.  The weather warranted soup or stew but since my preparation time was limited we settled on thawed-out leftovers.  Still it was nice to eat at home for a change.

Being the optimist that I am, I’m off to pack for our trip – we’ll be in Phoenix for the weekend where it’s still hot so I’ll need shorts and sandals, something dressy for Annie’s baby shower, then jeans and cotton sweaters for the current forecast in San Diego next week.  Maybe I’d better grab a second suitcase…………

  1. Glad to hear everyone is safe and they were able to find a hotel room. Keep me updated on their situation.

Isn’t this weather great?! I only say that because I know you hate it and you know I love it! Well, maybe you’ll get your warm weather at the end of the week. Hope your trip isn’t cancelled.
