Takin’ the High Road   Leave a comment

Yesterday’s fun and games featured a bike ride on the Frisco Highline Trail – an abandoned railroad bed that has been reinvented as a trail for horses, bikes, running, walking, whatever.  The trail goes between the Springfield-Branson International (go figure?) Airport and Bolivar, MO but Burl was mainly interested in riding the part that would take us to the newly rebuilt bridge over the Sac River.

We started north of Willard and quickly discovered that the trail had changed since we last rode it in June 2006 – at that time the trail was very flat and smooth with packed down small chat so riding our road bikes on it was a breeze, literally.  Our journey was just getting started when we encountered the first of many long patches of new chat/gravel which was NOT suited to our skinny bike tires – nor was it suited to making the ride comfortable.  Needless to say I uttered a few words stronger than Burl’s normal cussing of “gosh dang it!”

It took about an hour and a half to navigate the 15 miles to the bridge and by that time my interest in the bridge was nil.  My interest in getting on a road to get home was very high so about halfway home that’s what we did – despite a strong headwind and hillier terrain, my bod sure appreciated the smooth road.  As for the bridge – well, it’s sure built to withstand the arson that took out the last one!

I had visions of actually fixing a nice dinner for hubby last night but by time we got back to the car it was almost 6:00 so we stopped and ate on the way home – that home-cooked meal will have to wait a while since we’re facing a busy week with activities every night.  And to think I really did want to cook last night!
