Hunters in Michigan have a big jump on the deer. They buy huge bags of beets, carrots, apples or corn and set out a gourmet feast for their prey. When the deer are well acclimated to their new diet then the fun begins – POP go the guns or WHOOSH go the arrows and the hunter picks up his prize and brags to his buddies. What’s wrong with this picture?
We are in Marquette tonite where I can finally get to the web. My Alltel coverage leaves much to be desired but the email still gets through. We spent yesterday on Mackinac Island. The island is auto -free except for a firetruck and ambulance so the island teems with horses – and their deposits – and bicycles. We tried a tandem but after riding for a couple of blocks we decided to stay married and turned it in for single bikes! We rode all around the island stopping often to check out little trails into the wooded areas and enjoy the scenery
After a late lunch and browsing in the never-ending gift shops we headed for Fort Mackinac and spent a couple of hours exploring the original pre-Civil war buildings and getting a history lesson from the guides.
Today we were on the road by 7:30 to Sault Ste Marie on Lake Superior to take a tour of the Soo Locks. They have 4 locks which take ships from Lake Huron down the St mary river to Lake Superior. We got to experience being both raised and lowered through the locks and had a great tour guide who provided local color to her presentation. For about 30 minutes we were in Canadian waters but since we didn’t bring our passports we didn’t get to cross the international bridge.
The afternoon was spent riding west across the UP then north and along the Superior shoreline where we took frequent breaks to walk on the beach. It was glorious to just experience the Indian summer day with clear blue skies and no agenda. We didn’t even have a room reservation when we finally called it a day!
Tomorrow we head over to Ishpeming so Burl can see the National Ski Museum – then wherever the road takes us
