This evening we attended ”A New Taste” – a wonderful annual event which raises funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters which is a fabulous local charity. We were treated to the pre-event which featured some yummy wine tasting and outstanding hors d’oeuvres followed by taking our tummies all around the venue to taste wonderful samples from Springfield’s best restaurants. There were so many great dishes to choose from but every year I have to give my vote for favorite spot to Ocean Zen – others may come close but that’s still my #1 spot.
One of our favorite parts of the evening is bidding on goodies at the silent auction – in past years we have brought home Kraft foods (mac and cheese anyone? we still have some from last year along with cheese in the freezer!), teeth whitening, a 3M box of assorted office products, ballroom dance lessons, golf outings – a wide variety of goods and services. Tonight we bid with abandon and just knew we had once again spent a lot of $ but for a good cause – until all of a sudden we realized we had used the wrong bid number all evening long! DUH! I remember pulling the bid ticket out of my purse and looking at it upside down (and no, I hadn’t had THAT much wine!) and I told Burl we were #255. So we bid – and we bid – and we bid some more! Whew!
We were already trying to decide who to invite to a private wine tasting, how to share 50# of hamburger with our kids, who Burl could invite to go shooting at a shooting range – when we looked at the bid number again and realized we were really #225. We explained our dilemna to the auction people but alas, we were screwed. If the real #255 doesn’t want what we bought, the next highest bidder will get the items. Oh well – lesson learned for this number nerd – remember to look at the numbers right side up next time!
But we had a wonderful time, visited with many friends, ate yummy food, tried some new wines – so the evening was a rousing success and we hope Big Brothers Big Sisters made lots of $ – just sorry we weren’t able to contribute more to the cause. There’s always next year…………..
Real smooth bidding you did there. I was wondering if you could give me some tips for the next charity event I attend. Guess double checking the bid number would be a good start.
