Cyclin’ in the Sun   Leave a comment

Groundhog Day has ended – hopefully yesterday marked a turning point in the budget so even though I worked late on a beautiful summer evening (and it was Friday), I knew when I left work that I wouldn’t have to go into the office today.  Instead I eagerly rolled out of bed at 5:40 and in a little over an hour my neighbor Jenn and I were pulling out of the parking lot of a church about 10 miles west of Springfield ready for a 50+mile bike ride.

The route was a training ride for the MS150 ride I’ll be doing in 6 weeks and I really needed to get more miles on my bottom and my bike.  We had our share of LONG low-grade hills that seemed to fade into the horizon without an ending but it was fun to visit with some of the other riders and even though Jenn is over 30 years younger than I am, she paced herself so she never was too far ahead of me.  By 10:00 the sun was high in the sky, the humidity was well about 50% and we were both feeling the effects of the heat index since the temp was hovering at 90.

We pulled each other through the last few miles when our toes were getting tingly, and our butts really didn’t want to stay on the seat and our legs were feeling wobbly.  At the 51.4 mile mark the car came into sight and we practically sprinted the last bit of the ride.  As we headed home we revealed similar plans for the afternoon – first a shower, then lunch, then naps – Jenn inside and me floating in the pool.

Burl is watching pro golf on TV, I’ve finished knitting a baby gift and gotten some reading done and think I’m ready to think about where he can take me for dinner – obviously cooking is a low priority for me tonight!
