Golf Anyone?   Leave a comment

While golf doesn’t qualify as a 4-letter word for me, it’s certainly not on my Top 10 List of Fun Things to Do list.  But Friday night was Couples Golf at our golf club so being the good wife that I am, we played and it was actually fun – perhaps the most fun I can remember having that involved golf.  First of all, it was a picture-perfect summer evening, we only had to play a 9-hole scramble, Burl agreed in advance he wouldn’t get too competitive (he just didn’t want to be DFL) and finally we played with golf buddies Jim and Glenda.  They are such great people and proved to be great companions for our foursome despite the fact that they are many years young and light years better at golf than we are – Jim plays almost-scratch golf and Glenda has a handicap of around 12 so at best I figured I could learn something from them.

We totally blew the first hole (both of us, I might add!) but then we hit a string of pars that had Burl feeling pretty good – and we were actually using several of my shots so I liked that part.  On one par-3 hole we used only my ball so I parred a hole on my own – a true rarity for me.  While we didn’t win any $, we weren’t DFL so Burl didn’t mope for long.  But the best was yet to come as we went out to eat with 3 other couples and he actually complimented me on my game as did our partners – they were surpised to learn I played so well having only played a grand total of 18 holes this year so who knows – golf may move onto the Top 100 List someday!

To continue our golf weekend we volunteered yesterday for the Price Cutter Charity Golf Tournament at Highland Springs Country Club – it’s part of the Nationwide Tournament for the PGA and I’m sure we saw some golfers who will be playing on Sundays in the big golf leagues next year.  The tourney is an annual volunteer event favorite for both of us and this year we worked with golf pals Carol and Keith which made it even more fun.

We had lunch yesterday with nephew John and his wife Sheri and their boys Jack and Sam – they were on their way home from picking Jack up at Camp Kanakuk in Branson so we were pleased they had time to stop for a brief visit.  Sam is almost 8 and has recently taken up golf so before the afternoon ended we headed for the driving range at our club so Sam could hit some balls – ends up he’s a darned good golfer and we predict he’ll be giving his older brother and dad a run for their money on the links in a few short years.  We may even see him playing in the PGA some day.

The rest of the weekend was spent at home and it was nice to get in some quality pool time – floating and reading were the preferred activities – unfortunately yard work had to come first since we hosted a picnic this evening for Burl’s Shring Cruiser motorcycle unit.  More good food and good friends and the end to a jam-packed but still fun and relaxing weekend.
