Google Me

According to the Wall Street Journal of May 8th, you’re a nobody unless your name Googles well.  In fact, couples are now Googling potential baby names to see how prominent the ranking will be on this website.   To ease my mind that I’m a “somebody” and not a “nobody”, I Googled my name (including my maiden name which I use as my middle name) - fortunately I came up in the first 8 listings which meant I qualified for prominent placement.  Hope you’re more impressed than I am but at least my curiosity has been satisfied.

I’m facing the fact tonight that I’m a total hair retard (I didn’t Google “hair retard” but if I had, I’d probably get the top 8 listings for that too!)  Somehow I never mastered the art of having great hair – I made it through high school and college sleeping in rollers every night.  Lest you think that wasn’t cool, you have to remember that was back in the days of non-co-ed dorms and everyone slept in their rollers with a puffy bonnet-type thing over them.

Post college I graduated to hot rollers and eventually settled on a curly perm as my gift to myself upon divorce – hubby #1 couldn’t stand that style so getting it was my “in your face” gesture to him.  More importantly, it was wash and go hair and at the time wasn’t too out of style – not that I’ve ever been known for stylish hair.

My mother spent the last few years of her life suggesting I should cut my hair and I resisted – 2 weeks after her funeral, I cut it short and loved it.  Yes, Mother, you WERE right as usual.  So for almost 10 years I kept it short and then about a year ago, started letting it grow a little.  Found a 2-minute style with some gel and a hair dryer and that worked – then a few weeks ago I told my stylist to take off a little more than normal.  I wasn’t sure just exactly what I was going to do with it but at her suggestion I bought a set of hot rollers (flashback 35 years!).  Now I do the hot roller thing every morning but decided today I need a different hair cut.  Daughter Tammy (she of the always-awesome hair) has a book of short hairstyles so I’ll be calling on her for assistance before my next appointment in a couple of weeks.

In the meantime, I bought a headband today to keep it back from my face a little and actually kind of like the effect.  It’s another easy solution so with my nifty headband and hot rollers I can hopefully get by until I decide just exactly what to do.  Shaving my head is definitly NOT an option!  Stay tuned to see how this hair saga unfolds.  Too bad I can’t wear ball caps to work – they are always a good solution to bad hair days!

  1. Ok, I love you mom, but I’m getting a very weird visual of the hot rollers/headband combo. You need my hairstyle mag and I’m happy to loan it to you. I think shorter just might be the way to go. I know I’m sure glad I did. Since your hair is straight, you should work with the texture and quit fighting it. Maybe on Sunday (Mother’s Day) we could have a hair style play day. Personally, I’d cut it. After all, it’s just hair and it will grow!!!

Thanks for the compliment on my hair. As we saw last year, with my 40th birthday billboard, I have had my share of awful hairstyles in the past too!

  2. Oh, I did Google myself and my bog came up first! Also my gallery on Orchid, the jeweler’s network I belong to. Thanks to Google, I was reunited with my old college roommate several years ago!

  3. Well just so you know, I don’t do hot rollers and the headband at the same time!!! I’ll be glad to take you up on the hair style play day on Sunday – sounds like fun – AFTER our exercise of course. :-)

A college friend found me a few years ago using my maiden name – she was actually wanting Sally’s address as she was going to be in St. L. but couldn’t find her so Googled me and found me. Glad to know you’re also a somebody – now if you had a name like Mary Smith there’s no telling where your placement would be!!!

  4. Hey-I never have time to visit blogs but thought I would stop by. I have a suggestion for your hair… I really think it may be time to change stylists. I just did and was very happy. I know Pat is inexpensive, but this is your appearance your talking about…. I figure if I am going to pay a little more, then I can be really picky.
Ask Tammy – she knows every stylist in town!
