Dark and Stormy Night

Woke up this morning about 4:00 to see a guy standing next to the bed with flashlight in hand – fortunately it was Burl!  The lights had gone off during our stormy night and he was checking the clock to see the time.  Since I sleep in the dark I decided I may as well just go back to sleep and consider my options at daylight if we still had no electricity.  But within 45 minutes the fan was once again whirring in the bedroom and darn if we didn’t wake up right on time even without an alarm!  It’s a lot more fun to lose electricity when it’s 70 degrees outside instead of 10 above!

Just got home from our Wednesday night dinner at church – one of the highlights of my week because a) it officially marks getting through >50% of my work week (usually); b) I don’t have to cook and it only costs $3.50 per person; and c) we always get to visit with fun people.

Now I need to contemplate my weekend wardrobe.  Tammy and I are leaving mid-day on Friday to drive to K.C. where we will meet Ralph for our “Girls Get-away” – actually our annual Christmas shopping trip that just didn’t happen last fall so now we don’t have to delude ourselves that we’re shopping for others and we can just shop without guilt for ourselves!  Except of course I will have to see what goodies I can find for Julia and Lydia!  We always have such a great time together and this year we’ll be staying in a 2-room suite which means that the girls can sleep in one room and I’m in the other where I can read after I’m in bed (translation:  get in bed, read for a few minutes, start dozing, wake up, attempt to read some more, doze again, repeat until I finally wise up to the fact that I can’t remember what I’ve read and I turn off the light!)

Tammy is our fashionista (and Fashion Police) so I have to make sure I don’t choose any ensembles that will get me arrested!  She’s also our personal shopper as she can put together outfits that I would never consider and they usually turn out to be among my favorites.  We will hit all our favorite spots – Oak Park Mall, Westport, Jerusalem Cafe, Cost Plus World Market, The Plaza and Town Centre Square – but for me it’s not about the shopping, it’s about spending time with my daughters – no kids, no husbands,  no seeing friends in K.C., no distractions – just us!  Can’t wait!

  1. Don’t worry about getting arrested. I promise not to flash my badge! Actually, I’ve been feeling less than stylish lately. This “student” wardrobe is wearing a bit thin (figuratively). I think this trip might be the fashion shot in the arm I need. At least I’ll have two very opinionated people with me to steer me in the right direction.

Can’t wait to eat at Jerusalem Cafe! Yum, yum, yum!

  2. I will probably defer to your sister to give you advice because you know my tastes run pretty conservative – besides I think you’re the expert! I am glad to see the nautical look back (as if it ever went out with me or Aunt Susie!) and I dig the madras plaid stuff that was so “in” when I was in college. I could say I wish I’d saved it but with 20+ pounds on my bod since the 60s the only thing I could do with my madras would be to get a pretty penny from it as vintage clothing!
