Our dog Mulligan has told us he’s the world’s smartest and most wonderful dog – and I truly believe him. However, as far as non-human friends go, it’s pretty hard to compete with a good book. I just finished “Tough Choices” by Carly Fiorina who was the CEO of Hewlett-Packard for 5+ years before being canned by her board. Since she wrote the book it naturally is slanted in her favor and I found myself drawn into her rah-rah-rah for all her accomplishments both at HP and with Lucent and AT&T in pre-HP days. I had heard her speak on a radio show and was rather intrigued with her story – especially since she’s from my era and obviously was quite successful. She’s also living proof that the bigger they are, the harder they fall. Still a good read and lots of leadership ideas.
Now I’m reading “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak which daughter Ralph recommended. It is phenomenal – despite the fact that it’s narrated by Death, the style is so unique and it’s hard to put down. Also hard not to read too quickly so I’m trying to savor every page.
Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read! What’s on your reading list today?
Both books sound v. interesting. I saw an interview with Fiorina on PBS or something that was really intriguing.
I’m in the middle of this oddball sci-fi novel Solaris and the latest copy of the geek-out literary magazine The Believer.
On my nightstand is “Beautiful Fall” the story of the rise and fall of Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent in 1970s Paris. I’m sure you find it shocking that I’m reading a novel about fashion! It’s an interesting read, but one I’m tackling slowly. I tend to get sidetracked with magazines.
